Among the many different features and tools that were introduced in Windows 11 was the Windows Subsystem for Android. Microsoft has claimed that this feature will allow you to run Android apps on your Windows 11. However, until now, Windows still does not have support for Google Play Store, and you can only install a limited number of apps using Amazon Appstore. Now Microsoft has shown a public plan to make this feature even better.

Since the introduction of the WSA feature, Microsoft has constantly been improving it. For example, the company recently added a kernel system update from Android 11 to 12.1, improved performance, and added new integrations with Windows. A few days ago, Microsoft published the GitHub repository, which is intended for app developers. Here, developers can find information and submit bug reports and a public roadmap of improvements in the WSA.

It is the roadmap that has attracted the most attention. It says that Microsoft plans to update the subsystems to Android 13. This should help fix many bugs and improve WSA performance. However, since you can’t see the Android system interface itself, you can’t see all the visual improvements in Android 13. You will only be able to see the interfaces of the apps you run. Microsoft is also working on support for home screen shortcuts, file transfers, picture-in-picture mode, and default local network access.

The company has also listed a few features which won’t appear in the Windows for Android subsystem. Microsoft has explained that these will not work because of a visualization layer or a lack of functionality. For example, features such as DRM at the hardware level, USB support, direct access to Bluetooth devices, and all widgets will be blocked.

Unfortunately, there is no information in the roadmap about whether it will be possible to install regular APKs to the subsystem. You must use ADB or another tool to install apps from Amazon Appstore. There is also no information on whether Amazon Appstore is supported in regions where it is not officially available.
