The Nintendo Switch is one of the most popular and best portable consoles in the world. And the number of new users grows every year, as does the number of questions about using this console. One such question is how to turn off the Nintendo Switch. It seems like a very simple question, but let’s find out if it’s really that simple.

When you should turn off your console

Experience shows that people want to turn the console off completely in such situations, for example:

  • If you have played a game and you understand that you won’t soon pick up the console again, and it makes no sense to leave it turned on
  • If you are somewhere on the road and you can’t recharge your device, then it’s better to turn it off to minimize the loss of charge
  • If you are worried about your battery not wearing out over time, since the console uses little power during sleep mode

What is the difference between turn off and sleep mode

On the Nintendo Switch, hibernation is implemented in much the same way as on other consoles. When you put the console into hibernation mode, it essentially goes into pause mode, which you can resume very quickly at any time. In the case of a complete shutdown, however, you run the risk of losing an unsaved process. Also in hibernation mode, your console can download updates or games. But a small disadvantage of hibernation mode is power consumption, which encourages many users to resort to a full console shutdown. If you do decide to turn off your console, you have two basic options – a proper shutdown and a forced shutdown.

How to properly turn off a Nintendo Switch

In order to avoid various malfunctions or losses, it’s recommended that you perform a proper turn-off, and to do this you will need to:

  1. Find the {power} button, which is in the upper left corner, near the volume buttons
  2. Press and hold the button for 3 seconds
  3. You should see a {special system menu} where you must select the power options
  4. In the power options menu, select the {power off} option

After these steps, your console will go out and turn off completely. It doesn’t consume battery power or network data when turned off.

How to do a forced shutdown of the Nintendo Switch

There are situations when your console could lag or simply doesn’t respond to your actions, in that case you will help to force a shutdown, to do this you need to find the power button in the upper left corner and press it for 12 seconds. After that, the screen will go out and that will be a sign of a complete console turn off. But the forced shutdown method is recommended to use only in emergency situations and not to use it too often because otherwise you can corrupt the data on your console or lose your game saves.
Keep in mind that in order to turn on your console after it has completely shut down, it isn’t enough to activate the Joy-Cons as in the case of sleep mode. And you will have to press the power button to turn on your tablet.

How to turn off the Nintendo Switch with Joy-Cons if it is connected to the home screen

Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to completely shut down the Nintendo Switch, which is in TV mode with Joy-Cons. The only thing you can do is to put the console into sleep mode. This won’t be a big problem, since the sleep mode doesn’t consume much power, and during the use of TV mode, the console is in the docking station, where it is charged.
