Nest thermostat is pretty easy to use, but it may not be so obvious how to turn it off when you don’t need the heating or air conditioning. However, it’s actually quite simple.
In a nutshell, you need to use the dial to rotate to the Mode menu and select the Off option from there. That’s it.
What’s more, you can use a Nest app to turn off your thermostat. For this, you’ll need to use just the same steps. Go to the Mode menu and select the Off option.

When you turn your Nest thermostat off, it stops heating or cooling your home. However, it will still monitor the temperature and send alerts if it gets too hot or cold.
This is called Eco Temperatures (Safety Temperatures). This feature is triggered when the temperature reaches critical and dangerous values, even if the Nest thermostat is turned off. In other words, the thermostat will automatically start heating or cooling for safety reasons.
But you can deactivate it too.
How to turn off Eco Temperatures on Nest thermostat
You can also turn off this feature using the thermostat settings. And here’s how:
- Press the thermostat and scroll to Settings. Press again.
- Select Home Assist.
- Press on Stop Using.
- Next, scroll to the Eco option and press it.
- Use the dial to change the Heat to and Cool to temperatures to Off.
- Finally, rotate the dial to Done and press to confirm and exit.
Now that the protective temperatures are off, you can safely put your Nest thermostat in Off mode. Cooling or heating will not start, even at critical temperatures.
Should the Nest thermostat be on or off?
Whether your Nest thermostat should be on or off depends on your needs. Here are a couple of things you should consider:
How long will you be away from home?
If you’re going to be away for a few days or more, it’s a good idea to turn off your Nest thermostat completely. This will save you energy and prevent your HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system from running unnecessarily.
What is the temperature outside?
If it’s very hot or cold outside, you may want to leave your Nest thermostat on so your home stays comfortable. However, if it’s mild outside, you can probably turn it off without problems.
Your comfort preferences.
If you are comfortable with a cooler or warmer temperature in your home, you may want to leave your Nest thermostat on even when you are away. This will ensure that your home is comfortable when you return.
Keep in mind that large temperature swings can be harmful to your home. That’s why it’s recommended NOT to turn off your thermostat.
I recently moved into a house that has Nest thermostats in the house as well as for a separate heater in the garage. Can someone please tell me how to shut it off completely in the garage? The thermostat indicates that it’s off but the ECO Safety feature remains on. I don’t need to heat my garage and want the heater shut down completely. Please advise.
