AirTag is a Bluetooth-connected beacon with a limited range of approximately 30 feet. It does not have GPS or Wi-Fi capabilities and can only send data when connected to another Apple device via Bluetooth. If the AirTag is out of range from your iPhone, it will connect to any nearby iPhone and send its location data to the Find My network.

While this feature is beneficial for security purposes, it can be inconvenient if you share an AirTag-attached item with someone else, as it may start beeping. However, you can mute the AirTag to prevent this.

How to Set Up Apple AirTag

Setting up an Apple AirTag is quick and automatic when connected to an iPhone or iPad. Start by removing the device from its packaging and pulling off the protective film from the battery. The AirTag will emit a sound, confirming its activation.

Unlock your iPhone or iPad and bring the AirTag close to the device. A pop-up window will appear on the screen, similar to the setup process for AirPods. Tap “Connect” and choose a name for your AirTag from the suggested options, such as “Keys,” “Backpack,” or “Luggage.” You can also enter a custom name if you prefer.

Once this step is completed, the AirTag will be automatically linked to your Apple ID. This security feature prevents unauthorized use—no one else can connect your AirTag to their device without your Apple account credentials.

After setup, your AirTag will appear in the Find My app, where you can track its location, activate Lost Mode, or play a sound to help locate a misplaced item. Now, your AirTag is ready to use, and you can attach it to your keys, bag, or any other important belongings.

How to Mute AirTag?

You can mute the AirTag in two ways:

  • Pause Safety Alerts:
    • Open Find My or tap the pop-up notification about the AirTag moving with you.
    • Tap Continue on the notification.
    • Tap Pause Safety Alerts.
  • Disable Safety Alerts:
    • Open Find My and go to the Me tab.
    • Toggle off Item Safety Alerts.

This will prevent your AirTag from making sounds if it’s away from a connected device for a prolonged period. However, it will still emit a sound if it moves with someone who has an Apple device.
